Freshman Sofia Wroblewski Sets New All-Time School Record

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, IRVINE, CALIFORNIA: YLHS Cross Country took on one of the nation’s premier high school meets at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, with the Mustangs competing across the Gold Division races and the Varsity Girls earning a spot in the elite Bob Day Sweepstakes. Fast racing produced a long list of season and personal bests for Yorba Linda with 22 PRs in all.

Freshman Sofia Wroblewski delivered the fastest performance of the night for the YLHS girls, racing to an outstanding 16:30.0 in the Bob Day Sweepstakes and setting a new all-time, all-grades girls’ school record. Congratulations, Sofia, on this huge accomplishment! Senior Savannah Gonzalez followed in 17:37.8, while freshman Madison White was the Mustangs’ third finisher in 18:28.9. Senior Emily Maurer ran 18:44.1 and senior Camille Ta-Perez finished in 18:58.1.

The Varsity Boys also put together a fast night in the Gold Varsity A race. Senior Rio Maldonado led the Mustangs with a 15:41.9, followed closely by junior Carlos Barry in 15:46.4 and junior Ryan Wang in 15:56.6. All three broke the 16-minute barrier. Senior Daniel Hernandez followed in 16:27.6, junior Seth Block ran 16:34.3, junior Oscar Barajas finished in 16:36.7, and sophomore Armani Aguirre crossed in 18:14.4.

YLHS also produced strong performances in the grade-level Gold races. Sophomore Breanna Barajas led the way with a 12^th-place finish in 19:51.7 in the Gold Sophomore Girls race. In the Gold Junior-Senior Girls race, junior Lizzy Clark finished 16^th in 19:43.9, followed by junior Kara Kim in 20:26.9 and junior Sydney Van Stralen in 20:27.6.

For the boys, junior Christopher Chiu led Yorba Linda in the Gold Junior race with a 17:32.7, followed by junior Landon Dreyfus in 18:47.5. Freshman Nathaniel Lynch paced the Mustang freshmen in 18:24.2, with freshman Caleb Kay next in 19:05.0 and freshman Hudson Pohl third for YLHS in 20:27.5. In the Gold Sophomore race, Maddex Thoongsuwan led the Mustangs in 18:36.3, followed by Andrew Nguyen in 19:53.7 and Makai Barnett in 20:47.7.

The night was especially notable for the number of personal and season bests. The results show new personal bests for Rio Maldonado, Carlos Barry, Ryan Wang, Oscar Barajas, Daniel Hernandez, Christopher Chiu, Landon Dreyfus, Nathaniel Lynch, Caleb Kay, Hudson Pohl, Gary Stone, Neil Stone, Breanna Barajas, Lizzy Clark, Savannah Gonzalez, Kara Kim, Emily Maurer, Madison White and Sofia Wroblewski, among others, while additional Mustangs recorded season-best performances.

With three varsity boys under 16 minutes and Sofia Wroblewski clocking a blistering 16:30.0 in the Bob Day Sweepstakes, Woodbridge delivered some of Yorba Linda’s fastest racing of the season so far.

Isabella Wroblewski Takes First Place, Varsity Girls Take Team Title

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA: Yorba Linda Cross Country turned in a standout performance at the Century Conference Preview at Yorba Regional Park, highlighted by an individual varsity victory, a girls varsity team title, and several top finishes across the day’s races. Races were rescheduled from late afternoon to morning in an effort to avoid athletes competing in triple-digit temperatures, but temps still climbed into the 90s!

The Varsity Girls led the way for the Mustangs, capturing first place as a team out of 15 area schools. Senior Isabella Wroblewski claimed the individual title, winning the three-mile race in 17:28.1. Freshman Sofia Wroblewski added an impressive fifth-place finish in 17:52.9, while senior Savannah Gonzalez crossed the line sixth in 18:18.4. Sophomore Brooke Habbestad gave Yorba Linda a fourth runner in the overall top 10, finishing eighth in 18:49.9. Senior Emily Maurer finished 19:25.1 in as the fifth scoring runner for Yorba Linda, securing a first-place win for the team.

The Varsity Boys finished sixth as a team in a deep conference field. Junior Carlos Barry led Yorba Linda, running 16:13.3 for 22^nd place. Senior Rio Maldonado followed in 16:30.6, with junior Ryan Wang close behind in 16:33.7, giving the Mustangs their top three varsity boys times of the morning. The Varsity Boys finished first in the Freeway League.

In the Girls Frosh/Soph two-mile race, sophomore Aubrey Maurer delivered another big performance for YLHS, racing to second place in 13:53.0. Freshman Jackie Voegltly finished in 17:40.7.

Yorba Linda also competed in the Boys JV two-mile race, with junior Landon Dreyfus finishing in 13:21.7.

Overall, the day belonged to the YLHS varsity girls, who placed four runners in the top eight, won the team competition, and were led by Isabella Wroblewski’s individual victory. The Mustangs came away from the Conference Preview with a strong early look at their Century Conference competition and several impressive performances heading deeper into the 2026 season.

The Boys Frosh/Soph contest was cancelled due to high heat. Next time, guys!

SATURDAY, AUGUST 22, WALNUT, CALIFORNIA: YLHS XC Mustangs launched their 2026 season with a new race on the schedule: the Mountie XPress Invitational at Mt. SAC, featuring a summer-heat-friendly two-mile course. With races divided by grade and school size, the Mustangs wasted no time putting the competition on notice, racking up nine top-10 finishes!

Yorba Linda’s freshmen made an impressive YLHS XC debut, sweeping the individual titles in both freshman races! Sofia Wroblewski led the freshman girls with a first-place finish in 11:28, followed by teammate Madison White, who claimed second place in 12:27. On the boys’ side, Noah Olivares raced to the freshman title with an impressive 10:46.

Congratulations and a big Mustang welcome to all of our freshmen who completed their first-ever YLHS XC meet: Jackie Voeglty, Nathaniel Lynch, Hudson Pohl, Mete Yal, Gary Stone, Neil Stone, and Ty Peterson. A great start to their high school cross country careers!

Isabella Wroblewski delivered one of the meet’s biggest performances, winning the senior girls’ race in 11:14—the fastest girls’ time of the entire meet across all divisions. YLHS girls took first place across all divisions at the meet.

The junior boys turned in YLHS’s strongest team performance of the day, earning an impressive third-place finish. Carlos Barry, Ryan Wang, and Oscar Barajas led the way, finishing 4th, 8th, and 19th, respectively. Carlos also clocked the fastest time of the day for the Mustangs.

Saturday, November 29, 2025 — Clovis, Calif.

Congratulations to our eight Mustang runners who traveled last weekend to compete in the pinnacle cross country season race in California: the CIF XC State Championships! Hundreds of runners from schools across the state converged for a season-capping contest on Saturday, November 29.

Senior Toren Habbestad finished in 15:24.6 and 12^th out of 219 runners in the Boys’ D3 race, capturing the school record for fastest 5K in school history and breaking a record held since 2015.

While all of the season XC races take place on three-mile courses, the State course is a 5K (3.1 miles).

Junior Isabella Wroblewski finished in 17:54.3 and 11^th place out of 216 contenders in the Girls’ D3 race, breaking the school record held since 2019 for fastest girls’ 5K in school history. She was followed by Junior Savannah Gonzalez, Freshman Brooke Habbestad, Senior Brooke Boyd, Junior Camille Ta-Perez–all of whom finished in the top half of contestants–Senior Lorelai Pohl, and Sophomore Sydney Van Stralen.

The Girls’ Varsity team placed 8^th as a team among more than 25 schools featured in the race.

Congratulations, Mustangs! You make us so proud!!

Saturday, November 22, 2025 — Mt. SAC, Walnut, Calif.

YLHS XC Girls Varsity and Senior Toren Habbestad all advanced to State last Saturday, November 22 at Mt. SAC, during the Southern Section CIF Finals. All eight runners will compete at the State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno this Saturday, November 27. The team competed well, with two top-ten finishes and two season-capping PRs!

Toren came in 9^th place overall in the D3 Boys’ race, securing a qualification for State as an individual. This is only the second time a boy from YLHS has advanced to the State meet; the first time was when Toren qualified as an individual at CIF Finals in 2024. Congratulations on your achievement, Toren!

Junior Isabella Wroblewski came in 4^th overall in the D3 Girls’ race. Congratulations, Isabella, on your performance! She was followed by Junior Savannah Gonzalez, Freshman Brooke Habbestad, Senior Brooke Boyd, Junior Camille Ta-Perez, Senior Lorelai Pohl, and Sophomore Sydney Van Stralen. Yorba Linda girls finished 4^th as a team, securing their advancement to state.

The photos say it all! It was a CIF-Southern Section Prelims event to remember at Mt. SAC on Saturday, November 15. It rained and did not let up the entire day. The course was shifted to a “rain course” that kept the contest to asphalt. This meant a better surface than mud, but runners still had to account for puddles and slippery surfaces.

Senior Toren Habbestad finished 4^th overall in his D3 heat, advancing to finals next week. Our Girls’ Varsity Team–Juniors Isabella Wroblewski, Savannah Gonzalez, and Camille Ta-Perez; Seniors Brooke Boyd and Lorelai Pohl; Sophomore Sydney Van Stralen, and Freshman Brooke Habbestad–came in 2^nd place as a team in their heat, with Isabella finishing 2^nd overall. Lorelai, Sydney, and Brooke H. all PRd at this race! Great job, ladies! Our Lady Mustangs are currently ranked #8 in the state! The team will return to Mt. SAC next Saturday, November 22, for CIF-SS Finals. Go Mustangs!!

Even with race times switched to morning instead of afternoon, all runners at the Century Conference Finals on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, faced high heat and dry breezes. Our Mustang men and women pushed through for some impressive times.

Our Lady Mustangs posted incredible finishes, with Junior Isabella Wroblewski scoring 1^st place in the girls varsity contest, followed by two top-10 finishers, Junior Savannah Gonzalez in 7^th place and Freshman Brooke Habbestad in 10^th place, along with Junior Camille Ta-Perez, Senior Brooke Boyd, Sophomore Sydney Van Stralen, and Senior Lorelai Pohl. Both Lorelai and Sydney PRd in this race–well done!

The YLHS Girls Varsity Team placed 1^st in the Crestview League as well as 1^st place in the 15-school Century Conference! Congratulations, ladies! They also advanced as a team to CIF Prelims in two weeks on Saturday, November 15.

Senior Toren Habbestad placed 1^st in the Varsity Boys contest, with an impressive time of 14:45. He will advance as an individual to CIF Prelims. Senior Michael Kowalyshyn finished in 16:13 and gained a spot on the All-League Second Team for the Crestview League. He was followed by Junior Rio Maldonado, Freshman Armani Aguirre, Senior Ryan Olivas, and Sophomore Carlos Barry. Congratulations, guys!

In the Girls JV/Soph/Frosh Contest, our Lady Mustangs placed 1^st overall as a team with three top-10 finishes! Junior Kathryn Thompson placed 2^nd overall, Sophomore Lizzy Clark PRd and came in 4^th place, and Freshman Anya Bharadwaj, who finished in 9^th place. Congratulations, ladies!

Athletes, parents and friends also recognized and celebrated eight Mustang seniors, a few of whom completed their final cross country race at this contest.

Our Yorba Linda Mustangs attended the 77^th Annual Mt. SAC XC Invitational on Friday to prepare for league finals this upcoming week.

Isabella Wroblewski​, Toren Habbestad​, and Armani Aguirre are  the new top-ranking, all-time YLHS XC school record holders as of Saturday, October 18 at the Orange County XC Championships in Silverado Canyon.

Isabella posted her first sub-17 finish, posting a 16:40.3, a PR for her as well as the new all-time school record. She’s the first girl in YLHS history to log a sub-17 time. Congratulations to Isabella as she now holds the record time for YLHS women in the 3-mile distance! Isabella came in 6^th place overall in the Girls’ Sweepstakes race and was the third fastest junior in the event.

Congratulations to Girls’ Varsity Team members Isabella Wroblewski, Savannah Gonzalez, Camille Ta-Perez, Brooke Boyd, Brooke Habbestad, and Lorelai Pohl for finishing in 5^th place as a team in the Girls’ Sweepstakes contest! Our girls’ team is currently ranked 5^th in the CIF Southern Section and 10^th in the entire state! Congratulations, ladies!

Toren Habbestad ran his fastest race ever, clocking in at 14:26.0, a new PR for him and a new all-time school record for fastest 3-mile distance race in YLHS history! Toren was the 5^th fastest senior in the Boys’ Sweepstakes race and 9^th overall. The event drew thousands of runners from 25 of the top schools in Orange County.

 Armani​ Aguirre also broke the boys’ freshman school record time with a PR of 16:17.5. Congratulations, Armani!

Cool, clear skies in Huntington Beach helped our runners post fantastic scores at Central Park Invitational in Huntington Beach on Saturday. The three-mile course consisted of grass, dirt, asphalt, a dirt hill, and a loop around the lake.

Central Park is a difficult course, but nine of our Mustangs set new PRs. We also had two top-ten finishes with senior Toren Habbestad finishing 5^th in the Boys Sweepstakes race and junior Isabella Wroblewski finishing 3^rd in the Girls Sweepstakes race. The YLHS girls team came in 4^th place overall in the sweeps race.
