Mustangs Deliver Record-Setting Fast Times and Big PRs at Woodbridge

Freshman Sofia Wroblewski Sets New All-Time School Record

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, IRVINE, CALIFORNIA: YLHS Cross Country took on one of the nation’s premier high school meets at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic, with the Mustangs competing across the Gold Division races and the Varsity Girls earning a spot in the elite Bob Day Sweepstakes. Fast racing produced a long list of season and personal bests for Yorba Linda with 22 PRs in all.

Freshman Sofia Wroblewski delivered the fastest performance of the night for the YLHS girls, racing to an outstanding 16:30.0 in the Bob Day Sweepstakes and setting a new all-time, all-grades girls’ school record. Congratulations, Sofia, on this huge accomplishment! Senior Savannah Gonzalez followed in 17:37.8, while freshman Madison White was the Mustangs’ third finisher in 18:28.9. Senior Emily Maurer ran 18:44.1 and senior Camille Ta-Perez finished in 18:58.1.

The Varsity Boys also put together a fast night in the Gold Varsity A race. Senior Rio Maldonado led the Mustangs with a 15:41.9, followed closely by junior Carlos Barry in 15:46.4 and junior Ryan Wang in 15:56.6. All three broke the 16-minute barrier. Senior Daniel Hernandez followed in 16:27.6, junior Seth Block ran 16:34.3, junior Oscar Barajas finished in 16:36.7, and sophomore Armani Aguirre crossed in 18:14.4.

YLHS also produced strong performances in the grade-level Gold races. Sophomore Breanna Barajas led the way with a 12^th-place finish in 19:51.7 in the Gold Sophomore Girls race. In the Gold Junior-Senior Girls race, junior Lizzy Clark finished 16^th in 19:43.9, followed by junior Kara Kim in 20:26.9 and junior Sydney Van Stralen in 20:27.6.

For the boys, junior Christopher Chiu led Yorba Linda in the Gold Junior race with a 17:32.7, followed by junior Landon Dreyfus in 18:47.5. Freshman Nathaniel Lynch paced the Mustang freshmen in 18:24.2, with freshman Caleb Kay next in 19:05.0 and freshman Hudson Pohl third for YLHS in 20:27.5. In the Gold Sophomore race, Maddex Thoongsuwan led the Mustangs in 18:36.3, followed by Andrew Nguyen in 19:53.7 and Makai Barnett in 20:47.7.

The night was especially notable for the number of personal and season bests. The results show new personal bests for Rio Maldonado, Carlos Barry, Ryan Wang, Oscar Barajas, Daniel Hernandez, Christopher Chiu, Landon Dreyfus, Nathaniel Lynch, Caleb Kay, Hudson Pohl, Gary Stone, Neil Stone, Breanna Barajas, Lizzy Clark, Savannah Gonzalez, Kara Kim, Emily Maurer, Madison White and Sofia Wroblewski, among others, while additional Mustangs recorded season-best performances.

With three varsity boys under 16 minutes and Sofia Wroblewski clocking a blistering 16:30.0 in the Bob Day Sweepstakes, Woodbridge delivered some of Yorba Linda’s fastest racing of the season so far.
