XC Season opened with ASICS Cool Breeze Saturday night in Pomona: what an incredible PR from Senior Michael Kowalyshyn—coming in 15th overall in the men’s varsity race and beating his previous PR by 53 seconds! Congrats to freshman Armani Aguirre, junior Daniel Hernandez, and sophomore Oscar Barajas—all of whom PRd in their debut varsity race! Outstanding performance from Christopher Chiu and new PRs from Dean Oteyza, Andrew Nguyen, Andy Xu, and Makai Barnett in their first races as YLHS Mustangs.
We saw a fantastic PR from freshman Brooke Habbestad—coming in 4th overall and 1st place in the Small School division in the freshman girls’ race—and sophomore Sydney Van Stralen, who PRd in her debut varsity race, joining senior Lorelai Pohl. Congratulations to Lizzy Clark, who came in 6th place, Kara Kim, who PRd, for their performances in the Small School Sophomore race. We are so proud of freshmen Breanna Barajas, Brooke Gutierrez, Kara Kim, and Kaitlyn Wang on their first successful high school finishes.
The night’s big sweepstakes race, the “Sundown Showdown,” started late in the evening and featured Isabella Wroblewski and Brooke Boyd in the women’s race, who both gave excellent performances, coming in with 17:26 (12th overall) and 18:17 (53rd place overall), respectively.
In the men’s Showdown, Toren Habbestad finished in 14:57, coming in 15th overall, and Rio Maldonado achieved an impressive 16:14 time in his first Sundown Showdown event at Cool Breeze.
